A great start to the year for tourism - Conway

Clare Fine Gael Senator, Martin Conway, has described the latest CSO figures as a hugely successful start to the year for tourism.

“I am delighted that the CSO figures released today show that in the period January - March 2015, the total number of trips to Ireland increased by 14.1% compared to the same period twelve months earlier.

“In Clare, a bumper year for tourism is expected with numbers visiting the Cliffs of Moher up over 20% at this point. Loop Head opened on Good Friday for the 2015 season and in the first week had close to 1,000 visitors.

Longer sentences for burglars will deter repeat offenders - Conway

Fine Gael Senator and Seanad Spokesperson on Justice, Disability and Equality, Martin Conway, has today (Wednesday) said the planned introduction of legislation to allow for longer sentences for prolific burglars by the Minister for Justice and Equality, Frances Fitzgerald will deter repeat offenders.

“I am delighted that Minister Fitzgerald is due to introduce a suite of measures to tackle the distressing issue of burglaries.

Major changes underway in An Garda Síochána-Conway

Fine Gael Senator and Seanad Spokesperson on Justice, Disability and Equality, Martin Conway, has today (Wednesday), welcomed the commitment of the Garda Commissioner, Nóirín O’Sullivan, that no further rural Garda Stations are due to close. The Garda Commissioner made the announcement during hearings of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality held today.

The Garda Commissioner was before the Justice committee today to outline An Garda Síochána’s priorities for 2015 and the years ahead.

Seanad Public Consultation Committee hears from farming groups on the issue of farm safety

The Seanad Public Consultation Committee (SPCC) held a special meeting today dedicated to the issue of farm safety.

Various stakeholder groups, as well as individuals, appeared before the Committee and made presentations on the issue of farm safety.

Committee members were keen to establish how further fatalities and injuries on Irish farms can be prevented. Education and the provision of ongoing training for farmers and their families emerged as one of the key themes referred to by numerous speakers.

Conway welcomes upcoming public consultation day on draft flood maps in County Clare

Fine Gael Senator for Clare, Martin Conway, has today (Thursday) welcomed the public consultation day on draft flood maps to be held in Shannon, Co. Clare, on Monday the 23rd of March, 2015.

“The Office of Public Works is working in partnership with their consultants, Local Authorities and other stakeholders to deliver the CFRAM Study for the Shannon River Basin District (RBD). Work on the study started in January 2011 and will be completed in 2016.

Accountability in the Garda Síochána strengthened by new legislation - Conway

Fine Gael Senator for Clare and Seanad Spokesperson on Justice, Martin Conway, has said the passage of the Garda Síochána (Amendment) (No. 3) Bill 2014 through the Dáil and the Seanad provides a welcome opportunity for the reform of An Garda Síochána.

“This is a very important piece of legislation which will enhance the powers of the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) in criminal investigations and will enable GSOC to carry out its functions with greater capacity and autonomy. It also serves to further embed the key principle of accountability in the Garda Síochána.
