Fine Gael Clare Senator and Seanad Spokesperson on Disability, Martin Conway, has said that the lives of people with disabilities can be transformed through participation in PE, sport, fitness and recreation. Senator Conway was speaking today (Tuesday) ahead of the official launch of the UNESCO Chair at IT Tralee by President Michael D. Higgins.

Mediation can provide a great opportunity to resolve disputes - Conway

Fine Gael Seanad Spokesperson on Justice and Clare Senator, Martin Conway, welcomed the announcement by the Minister for Justice and Equality, Frances Fitzgerald, today (Wednesday) that she intends to proceed with the enactment of legislation to promote mediation as a viable, effective and efficient adjunct to court proceedings.

“Following my Private Members’ Motion on Mediation in the Seanad today, which was supported by the majority of Senators; I am delighted that the Minister for Justice has now committed to the enactment of the Mediation Bill in early course.

€13.1 million for regional and local roads in Clare - Conway

“The Minister for Transport, Tourism & Sport, Paschal Donohoe has today, (Tuesday) announced the investment of in excess of €13 million for regional and local roads in Clare

“Today’s announcement of € 13,123,764 million for local and regional roads in Clare is part of a national investment programme of €294 million which will allow approximately 2,000km of regional and local road to be maintained and strengthened in 2015.

Conway calls for amnesty for those seeking asylum for over seven years

Fine Gael Clare Senator, Martin Conway, has today (Thursday), said that we need to highlight the intolerable length of time spent by asylum seekers in the direct provision system. Speaking in the Seanad today, Senator Conway expressed his concern about the number of asylum seekers who are in the system for seven years and more and asked that the Government consider an amnesty for these asylum seekers.

“This system was only ever meant to be an ad hoc emergency response to the situation in Ireland at that time. It should never have been permitted to last into its 15th year.

Conway welcomes supply of new Garda vehicles

Fine Gael Senator and Seanad Spokesperson on Justice, Disability and Equality, Martin Conway, has today (Friday) welcomed the provision of 370 new Garda vehicles by the Minister for Justice, Frances Fitzgerald TD.

I am delighted that the Government has made available the first batch of the new Garda vehicles which were purchased and fitted-out following the announcement on Budget Day last October of an additional investment of €7 million in 2014 and €3 million in 2015.

2014 a hugely successful year for tourism- Conway

Fine Gael Senator for Clare, Martin Conway, has welcomed recent CSO figures showing that Ireland benefitted from a significant increase in tourism expenditure in 2014.

“I am very pleased to hear that tourism spend in Ireland was up again this year. According to the CSO, €2.8 billion was spent in Ireland by overseas visitors in the first 9 months of 2014. This represents an increase of €241 million, or 9.3% on the same period last year. Fáilte Ireland is projecting a 9% increase in overseas visitor numbers to 7.3 million for 2014.

Seanad Public Consultation Committee to host public hearings and publish report on the issue

It is estimated that Ireland has over twice the incidence of farm accidents as other European countries and 23 people, including five children, have died on Irish farms in the first nine months of 2014.

The Seanad Public Consultation Committee is now inviting written submissions from interested groups or individuals in the area of farm safety.

Conway welcomes Working Group on Seanad Reform

Fine Gael Clare Senator Martin Conway, has welcomed the establishment of a working group on Seanad Reform by An Taoiseach Enda Kenny TD

"I am delighted that the Taoiseach has set up a high powered working group to examine the important issue of Seanad reform. I very much welcome the appointment of former Senator Maurice Manning as chair. Maurice is a person of impeccable integrity who I had the privilege of getting to know as a student of his in UCD. As an advocate of Seanad reform for many years, I know that Dr Manning will bring a sense of purpose & urgency to his new role.
